About Star Wars and The Troubles

In today's part of my series about Liam, I have a small excerpt from an interview from 2015. Liam did a long interview with a German TV station in which he talked about Star Wars and his time in Belfast, among other things. In the interview, Liam said a sentence that was immediately adopted as a headline:
Star Wars Helped Us Forget The Bombs
In the interview the TV channel asked Liam the following question, " Mister Neeson, do you remember where and when you first saw 'Star What is it?"

And Liam replied to this question, " Yes, I remember that very clearly. I saw the first 'Star Wars' movie in 1977 in a cinema on the Balmoral Road in Belfast. The theater was filled to capacity. With people of all ages From children to senior citizens. We all sat in that cinema and watched 'Star Wars' while there was a real war going on outside on the street, which we called 'The Troubles'. I will never forget it. I will never this ' Star Wars' moment. I saw Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher fighting battles in space in the Millennium Fallon. And that was at a time when there were real gunfights out on the street . People were shot out of cars and bombs exploded everywhere. But for two hours we were able to forget what was happening in the real world. It was more than just an escape. It was a comforting experience. I told George Lucas about it very often during the filming of 'The Phantom Menace' . What it was like back in 1977 during 'The Troubles'."

I was playing at the Lyric Theater in Belfast at the time. Once we even had to evacuate the theater during a performance because there had been a bomb threat. We went out on the street while the soldiers searched the building and found nothing. After the soldiers had finished their search and left, we went back into the theater and just continued where we had left off. As nothing had happened. We had become accustomed to this madness. It was a crazy life , but we adopted to the threat over time."

"The experiences I joined in Belfast have taught me to be vigilant. But they also encouraged me to continue living my life and took ahead. You must not let youself be driven by fear. This also applies to the present day. Yes, that's easy to say, I know, and I also know that it's often very difficult to put it into practice. "

"I always think of a picture that shows a mother in Belfast. She took her children to school every morning, even though there had been attacks two streets away. She was a very brave woman. When the woman was asked why she was doing this she simply said, 'My children have to go to school, so I take them there '. There have always been moments like this in Belfast when people have shown extraordinary courage. That says a lot about what makes us human. "
