An honorary doctorate

Liam took a detour via Hollywood when he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Belfast's Queen's University by Professor Peter Gregson in New York in 2009.
Four decades after enrolling at Queen's University, Liam was awarded a PhD by Belfast Instituten in May 2009.
In his emotional speech, Liam quoted the Northern Ireland poet Paul Mulden, who comes from Armogh, as saying, " It is an art to create a monument to the human heart out of pain, out of misery, out of deep-seated sorrow, which shines like a golden dome between rain-slick and leaden roofs. In his speech, Liam also joked, " Now I can finally tell my mom that I graduated. "
Liam studied  physics, computer science and theater at Queen's University from 1971. However, he soon left college again to devote himself intensively to acting. To earn some money Liam worked at Guinness as a forklift truck driver.
In his laudatory speech,  Prof Gregson recounted details from Liam's 1970 application form,  which included the following note : "The 18-years-old's acadamic referee from Ballymena Technical College commented on the possibility of career away from physics and computer science. Liam's chief interest would appear to be amateur dramatics."
Someone recognized Liam's potential very early on. But I think the person who created the profile of this eighteen-year-old had no idea how big his former student's acting career would become.
Liam was accompanied to the awards ceremony by his sons Micheál (then 13 years old) and Daniel (then 12 years old).
